12.9-inch iPad to launch in late 2014?

Apple Store - Ginza, Tokyo, JapanA report just days ago suggested that Apple would launch a 12.9-inch iPad model in early 2014. But a report today splashed some cold water on that timeline, suggesting instead that it will not launch until later in the year. Citing its “sources from the upstream supply chain,” Digitimes adds that Quanta will manufacture the new iPad with production slated to start in the second half of the year.

The report also suggests that Apple will aim the larger-sized iPad at the education and enterprise markets. Order volumes could be “limited” not only because of its larger size but also because of potential challenges over “industrial design and assembly.”

Meanwhile, Inventec, Quanta and Foxconn are reportedly looking to land orders for Apple’s oft-rumoured iWatch. Component pilot production is already underway but low yields have pushed out mass production from the first quarter to the second.

Given Digitimes’ hit-and-miss record, all this should be taken with a healthy pinch of salt but it does hint at an exciting 2014 on the Apple front.
