Google Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 to launch October 15?

Rumoured Google Nexus 5Rumours of when Google could announce the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat have see-sawed between October 14 and October 31. While earlier rumours pointed to the former, more recent ones have suggested the latter. The latest rumours have now swung back towards an earlier date, this time October 15. According to CNET UK, “whispers around the campfire at Google Launchpad” are responsible for the new date.

The idea would be to unveil the new smartphone and the latest version of Android at a “fortnight-long event run by the Big G for helping start-ups to develop their business” rather than a press conference. The latter is almost certainly almost now for next week as Google typically sends out invitations a week in advance.

There is no word on when the Google Nexus 5 would then go on sale but previous rumours hinted at a late October date. As for its price, it could start as low as US$299 with 16GB and a 2,300mAh battery along with a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, Android 4.4, a 4.95-inch Full HD (1080×1920) display, 2GB of RAM, an 8MP rear camera with OIS, a 1.3MP front camera and LTE connectivity. For US$100, the internal storage would be bumped to 32GB and the battery to 3,000mAh.

No mention was made of other devices being announced. Past rumours have suggested that Google could also unveil an updated Nexus 10 tablet built by ASUS and perhaps even a smartwatch called Gem.
