Following a report late last week that Amazon would launch its first smartphone later this year, new details have surfaced including the first images of Amazon’s first entry into the competitive smartphone market. BGR, which has a solid track record when it comes to Amazon devices, landed not only the pictures but additional details.
The pictures reveal little about the Amazon smartphone as it is hidden away in a protective case designed to keep its appearance hidden until it is announced possibly in June. But as most smartphones today, it will be an all-touch affair. But four corner cameras can be discerned, giving credence to earlier reports that it would come with a custom glasses-free 3D interface.
As for specifications, BGR‘s sources confirm that the Amazon smartphone will come with a 4.7-inch HD (720×1280) display. The 3D interface is likely to offset the somewhat smaller and lower-resolution display than we have gotten accustomed to on recent flagship devices. Four front-facing cameras will work in conjunction with other sensors and the operating system to deliver the 3D experience. Rather than traditional cameras though, they will be low-power infrared cameras designed to track the position of the user’s face and eyes.
The 3D interface will be used extensively right from the lockscreen and special wallpapers to custom app icons. A number of main apps should also be compatible, including the maps application and Amazon stores. The latter could allow users to see objects in three dimensions. Amazon is also pushing to have developers enhance third-party apps for its 3D interface.
The report adds that Amazon is aiming for an announcement within the next two to three months with a launch to follow in late summer. Unfortunately for many of us, it appears that it will only be available in the U.S. initially.
A rumoured second handset, known as Project Aria, is expected to launch sometime after this first smartphone launches.
