Android 4.4.3 upgrade coming to Nexus devices starting May 23?

Google Android 4.4 KitKat

It has been fairly quiet on the Android 4.4.3 front since early May. It’s clear from the number of builds that have surfaced that Google is hard at work on this latest version of KitKat but a release date has remained elusive. An anonymous source has now tipped AndroidGeeks that the rollout will begin on May 23. Up first will be Google’s Nexus devices, namely the Google Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.

The Nexus rollout is expected to wrap up by the end of the month. It will then expand to Google Play edition devices such as the HTC One (M8) and Sony Xperia Z Ultra.

The timelines proposed in this new rumour certainly line up well with those proposed in an earlier leak.

Android 4.4.3 is expected to be a maintenance release that will not add any new features. But it should address most if not all bugs left in KitKat before Google moves on to the next major version of Android. Whether Google will unveil this new version of Android at Google I/O 2014 in late June or not remains to be seen. A rumour back in February suggested that this year’s event would focus on Google services and offer little on the Android front.

With the growing number of rumours pointing to the demise of the Nexus program (including the Nexus 6 as a casualty), Google may wait until it it is ready to announce its new Android Silver program to announce the next major version of Android.
