Android Wear 4.4W.2 rolling out to LG G Watch

Android Wear 4.4W.2Google last month revealed that it was planning to release at least a couple more updates before the end of the year for its Android Wear platform. The first of these is expected to add offline music playback and GPS support while a second will bring custom watch faces from Google Play. Rumours had hinted that we could see the first around the October 15 mark but that date came and went without any sign of it. It appears that this rollout as now begun with reports of LG G Watch users getting an OTA update to Android 4.4W.2 (sporting build number KNX01Q).

Reports confirm that Android 4.4W.2 comes with both offline music playback and GPS support. Unfortunately, the latter will be of little use to LG G Watch which does not have the necessary GPS chip to leverage it. The former will work. It allows the watch to pair directly with Bluetooth audio devices. It will also allow users to transfer their music to the watch so that they no longer have to rely on a smartphone.

The upcoming Sony SmartWatch 3 will be among the first to take advantage of the GPS feature when it launches (soon if Google Play is any indication).

As usual, it looks like Google is staggering the rollout so it may be a few days yet before all LG G Watch users see the notification to download the update. There is no word yet on when the update will roll out to other Android Wear devices.
