KitKat cracks 5% mark in latest Android platform distribution data

Android version distribution - April 2014

The latest update to the Google Android Platform Versions report is out and KitKat appears to finally be making some progress. According to April’s Android platform distribution data (collected during a 7-day period ending on April 1, 2014), the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system more than doubled since the last report in March, jumping from 2.5% to 5.3%.

The jump can be attributed in large part to the growing number of updates that are finally making their way to existing devices. With more updates and new devices about to hit the street across the world in the coming weeks and months, things are certainly looking up for KitKat adoption rates.

Older versions all showed further signs of decline over March’s numbers. Jelly Bean (versions 4.1.x to 4.3) dropped slightly to 61.4% from 62% while Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread saw bigger drops. In all, Android 4.x now accounts for 81% of all devices running Android.

Similar numbers from Apple, published about just over a week earlier, show that iOS 7 is now on 85% of all iOS devices. The previous version, iOS 6, dropped slightly to 12% over the previous month.

Both Apple and Google regularly publish their platform version reports to help developers plan what versions of the operating systems in their apps. It also gives us a glimpse at the state of the Android and iOS universes at a specific point in time.
