LG announces LG G3 Screen with octa-core LG NUCLUN processor

LG G3 Screen with LG NUCLUN SoCA day after a number of details emerged about LG’s latest phablet, the South Korean company formally announced the LG G3 Screen for its home country. It also formally introduced the LG NUCLUN processor, its first octa-core SoC sporting both an eight-core architecture and LTE-A Cat.6 connectivity.

The LG NUCLUN is built around the ARM big.LITTLE technology with four 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A15 cores and four 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A7 ones. The first four are used for more demanding apps and tasks while the latter ones are used for less intensive processing. It also sports an LTE-A Cat.6 connectivity with download speeds up to 225Mbps.

“NUCLUN opens up a new chapter in LG’s history of innovation in the mobile industry,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “With this in-house solution, we will be able to achieve better vertical integration and further diversity our product strategy against stronger competition. NUCLUN will give us greater flexibility in our mobile strategy going forward.”

The first device to use the LG NUCLUN will be the LG G3 Screen phablet (model LG-F490L and formerly codenamed LG Liger). It is “a smartphone developed specifically for the Korean market,” suggesting that we may not see it available in many other markets.

The LG G3 Screen will be available exclusively in South Korea for about CA$840 (US$750). It remains to be seen if LG will expand availability later with models such as the LG-F490K and LG-F490S for other South Korean carriers and others for other markets.
