LG G3 to be announced in June and to launch in July

LG ElectronicsDespite a raft of rumours that promised smartphones with WQHD displays at CES or MWC, flagship devices unveiled in the first half of the year have proven those reports wrong. As you would expect from rumours, they’ve simply shifted the timeframe to the second half of the year. Among the first devices expected to have a WQHD display is the LG G3, itself the topic of more than one rumour. There have been rumblings in the past that LG wanted to have the LG G3 out sooner than the LG G2 last year and the latest report out of Korea suggests that it will manage to do so.

According to ZDNet Korea, LG was originally planning to launch the LG G3 in August but is bringing that date forward in a bid to offer a device that can take on current flagships and the ones coming for the busy holiday shopping season. LG is now planning to announce the LG G3 in late June and follow that up with a launch in early July.

According to this latest report, the LG G3 will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 or perhaps even a Snapdragon 805. It will also pack a 5.5-inch WQHD (2560×1440) display, 3GB of RAM and a main camera featuring OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). It should also be waterproof, something we’ve heard before.

The report also suggests that the LG G3’s model number will be LG-LS990. This model number popped up late last week in a UAProf file on Sprint’s website. Details line up nicely except for the processor which was listed as a Snapdragon 800 on Sprint’s website. Given that the LG G2 already comes with a Snapdragon 800, the upgrade to a Snapdragon 801 or 805 is far more plausible.

If nothing else, the frequency at which leaks and rumours are popping up suggests an announcement will happen sooner than later.
