Microsoft readying two new smartphones, including one for selfies

Rumoured Nokia Lumia 830Microsoft is reportedly close to launching two new Windows Phone smartphones. Citing sources familiar with the company’s plans, The Verge reported today that Stephen Elop, now Executive Vice President of the Microsoft Devices Group, showed off both devices at an internal company meeting earlier this week. Codenamed Superman and Tesla, the former is reportedly a selfie smartphone while the latter is described as an “affordable high-end phone.”

The Nokia Superman will reportedly come with a 5MP front-facing camera as well as a 4.7-inch display. The Nokia Tesla appears to be none other than the recently rumoured Lumia 830 (pictured above). Possibly the Nokia Lumia 720’s replacement, it would come with a PureView camera and looks like a thinner and slimmer Nokia Lumia 930.

Superman and Tesla are codenames that first surfaced back in mid-April along with those for other devices. It’s not clear whether any of the others, including the Moonraker, Onyx and Vantage, are still in development.

The news comes as Nokia Canada teased last week that new Lumia smartphones were coming to Canada alongside the Nokia Lumia 635 announced back in April at Build 2014.

Microsoft is also expected to soon release Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 to developers and device manufacturers. It is expected to include both hardware and software improvements.
