New Moto G to follow last year’s Moto G

Rumoured Moto G (2014) retail box

With Motorola rumoured to be readying a successor to its well-received Moto G, we have all wondered what Motorola would call this new device. The names Moto G2 and Moto G+1 have both been bandied about but it appears that Motorola will go with a simpler but perhaps more confusing name for consumers. A new image obtained by GSMArena of the alleged retail box of the new smartphone show it being simply called the Moto G.

Using the same name for a second generation device is not unheard of. For example, HTC reused the HTC One name this year with its HTC One (M8) flagship device. It also builds on the familiarity established by the first device. Motorola may have decided to go with this strategy and not call the new Moto G the Moto G2 in order to avoid confusion with the LG G2.

The Moto G (2014) is expected to be a small evolution over the original model. It should sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, Android 4.4.4 KitKat, a 5-inch HD (720×1280) display with thinner bezels, 16GB of internal storage, an improved 8MP rear camera and dual-SIM support on some variants.

All should be revealed in a couple of days at Motorola’s September 4 press announcement in Chicago.
