Specifications of Moto G successor revealed?

GFXBench specifications for Motorola XT1063The Motorola G has proven to be a hit for Motorola. The inexpensive smartphone struck a delicate balance between specifications and price and quickly became a bestseller as well as a critical hit (and one of our favourite smartphones of 2013). Now attention is turning to the device that will succeed it. An early picture and alleged specifications have already surfaced. More information appears to have now surfaced courtesy of the GFXBench benchmarking site.

The device in question is identified as the XT1063. This is quite close to the model number, XT1068, cited by an earlier report and possibly an indication that there could be a number of variants for different carriers and markets. As for specifications, they line up nicely but give us more details:

  • Processor: 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400
  • Operating system: Google Android 4.4.4
  • Other connectivity: GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • Display: 5-inch HD (720×1280)
  • RAM: 1GB
  • Internal storage: 8GB
  • Rear-facing camera: 7MP AF
  • Front-facing camera: 2MP
  • Sensors: Accelerometer, compass, gyroscope, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor

At this point, it appears that the Moto G successor will improve upon the original by offering a larger display (albeit at the same resolution) and better back and front cameras. Other key specifications may not change much, suggesting it could sell for less as Motorola continues to drive smartphone prices down.

If Motorola does end up calling its Moto X successor the Moto X+1, it may well call its Moto G follow-up the Moto G+1. Otherwise, we could be looking at the Moto G2 or Moto G (2014).

There is no word on availability and pricing but a launch before the end of the year is likely.
