Verizon to launch Motorola Shamu as Moto S?

Rumoured Motorola Shamu screenshotThe Motorola Shamu has been the topic of a number of rumours already. Initially rumoured to be a 5.9-inch phablet that would launch as the Google Nexus 6, recent benchmarks have suggested instead a device with a more reasonable 5.2-inch display that would launch as the next Nexus smartphone when Android L is ready for prime time. New details have emerged that confirm some of the more recent details and shed more light on possible launch plans.

Alleged screenshots of the device itself confirm a device sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 with Adreno 420 GPU as well as a WQHD (2560×1440) display of unspecified size. The Android version is listed as L, again consistent with what we saw just a few days back. It also comes with a 13MP rear camera and a 2.1MP front camera. While the camera specifications are not an exact match, they are nonetheless quite close.

Contrary to those earlier rumours, the report adds that the Motorola Shamu does not have a fingerprint scanner. Could this be a feature on some variants and not others?

The IMEI of the device (masked for obvious reasons) points to a device for Verizon Wireless. And this is where things get interesting. While recent rumours have all been suggesting that the Motorola Shamu would launch as the Google Nexus 6, TK Tech News indicates that the Verizon Wireless variant will launch instead as the Moto S. A picture of the screen protector that comes with the device when it ships appears to confirm this:

It is entirely possible that Motorola will manufacture both a Shamu variant for Google as well as another for itself. The current Nexus smartphone, the Google Nexus 5 is certainly proof of that as it is in many ways a variant of the LG G2.

Motorola yesterday annouced that it will hold a press event on September 4 at which it will unveil new devices. Perhaps the mystery of the Motorola Shamu will be revealed then. Until then, take these latest rumours with a very healthy pinch of salt.
