ASUS announces ZenWatch 2

ASUS ZenWatch 2ASUS today announced the ZenWatch 2 as Computex kicked off. Powered once more by Android Wear, it promises “an even more refined design, an improved user experience, and the introduction of completely new functionality.” Not only does it add a new metal crown and a magnetic charger but it will also be available in two sizes, a choice of three case colours and a range of straps.

ASUS ZenWatch 2 is designed to be a truly personal device that wearers can customize even further to express their unique sense of style. Two sizes and three stainless-steel case colors, with 18 different strap material and color combinations, and instantly-changeable and customized watch faces along with an app that lets wearers design their own, there is truly a ZenWatch 2 for everyone.

The larger model will feature a 49mm case with 22mm strap while the smaller one sports a 45mm case and 18mm strap. With the different case colours (Silver, Gunmetal and Rose Gold) and 18 different strap choices (including one embossed diamond pattern and accented with Swarovski crystals), more than 100 possible combinations will be possible.

The new metal crown (the button on the side) promises to offer “a convenient new way to interact with ZenWatch 2.” Unlike the Apple Watch crown, it will not function as a scroll wheel but solely as a button. Like the original ZenWatch, the ZenWatch 2 will sport a curved AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection but it’s not clear if it will be the same size or not. The new charger promises faster charging times but again, no specific details are provided. Recent rumours suggested that ASUS had managed to get about four days worth of battery life on a single charge.

On the software size, the ASUS ZenWatch 2 will run the latest version of Android Wear. ASUS has also updated the watch software it bundles with the smartwatch. A new Watch Face Land app will let you create your own watch faces while the Remote Camera app now shows you the smartphone’s viewfinder right on the watch along with zoom controls and the ability to select the front or rear camera for your shot.

ASUS did not provide any details about availability or pricing today.
