Concept Sunday: Simplo glucometer smartwatch

Simplo glucometer smartwatch conceptA number of concepts we have featured on Concept Sunday have been devices looking to overcome some kind of medical condition. Most recently, we featured the stylish Embrace smartwatch which can detect epileptic seizures. Earlier, we featured the Glycount, a wearable diabetic management device that relied on an unspecified future technology that would “enable us to measure blood sugar level instantaneously and continuously.” Today we bring you the Simplo glucometer smartwatch, a concept that could see the light sooner given its more reasonable technological requirements.

According to the American Diabetes Association, one in four people over 65 in the U.S. have diabetes. The Simplo glucometer smartwatch is geared at this demographic and aims to “address the oftentimes overwhelming complexities of this lifestyle disease.” It was developed as a  theoretical product for Bayer Health by University of Kansas student Rebekah Winegarner.Simplo glucometer smartwatch concept

The Simplo glucometer smartwatch comes with a built-in dispenser that can hold up to six diabetes test strips. It will presumably notify its wearer when it’s time to take a measurement. Pressing the crown triggers voice directions if needed.

Little is known about the smartwatch’s other functions but it promises a simple design and interface to make it as simple to use as possible. This presumably means that a number of functions may be omitted but it could still provide a range of notifications and service as a health and fitness tracking device.

The Simplo smartwatch is complemented by a lancet and smartphone companion app. The former avoids the need for any future technologies that have yet to be invented while the latter provides more advanced tracking as well as coaching. The app can also trigger alerts to a loved one or a doctor in case certain actions are not taken when expected.

The Simplo glucometer smartwatch could be offered in a range of colours. Like the Embrace, it is stylish enough that it does not attract attention as a medical device.

There is no word at this point on whether Bayer will bring the Simplo smartwatch to market.
