LG webOS watch to launch as LG W Watch?

LG W Watch logoOne of the surprises at this week’s CES 2015 was an LG webOS smartwatch prototype. While LG did not formally announce the device, the watch made it onto center stage during Audi’s keynote and was used to summon a self-driving car.

A closer look at the watch later revealed that it was powered by Open webOS. Settings also revealed that it was called the LG W and bore model number LG-W120L. If and when it does launch, perhaps in 2016, we have discovered that it could do so as the LG W Watch.

As CES 2015 kicked off, LG filed a trademark for the name LG W Watch with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The filing itself reveals little and is broad enough that the new name could apply to a range of future devices that covers everything from watches and other wearables to mobile phones.

In fact, it’s not the first filing for the name. LG had already filed a trademark for W Watch back in April 2014. The new filing includes a logo not seen before. The watch may also have appeared on its way to a test center in India back in June.

Rumours this week suggest that LG is looking to launch its LG webOS smartwatch in early 2016.  It would presumably be a companion to new models in the LG G Watch family which is powered by Android Wear.

Thanks, tipster!
