Premium price for upcoming Huawei Watch?

Huawei WatchThe Huawei Watch may well have the smartwatch to garner the most buzz at Mobile World Congress. While Huawei touted the watch’s steel case (available in black, gold or silver), interchangeable bands and 1.4-inch full circle (400×400/286PPI) AMOLED display with sapphire crystal, it left out details such as availability and pricing. A rumour today suggests why Huawei may have opted to save the price details for later.

Citing unnnamed sources, BGR reports that the Huawei Watch could sell for as much as US$1,000. In comparison, other Android Wear watches sell for less than US$250. The price only tends to jump above when it comes to models sporting metal cases and bands.

Apple is expected to raise the price bar with the upcoming Apple Watch. Pricing is set to start at US$349 for the entry level collection but is expected to quickly jump for its other two collections with prices in the thousands for the Apple Watch Edition which could sport almost 30 grams of 18-karat gold?

Huawei is a Chinese company that has quickly established among the top smartphone manufacturers, primarily on the strength of its inexpensive devices. It seems odd that it would adopt a radically different strategy for its entry into the smartwatch market. Is it looking to borrow a page from Apple’s strategy book with the Huawei Watch?

Until there is more substantive evidence, we’ll leave this one in the rumours category.
