Android Wear 2.0 to launch in “early February”

Google Android Wear 2.0When Google announced its decision to delay the launch of Android Wear 2.0 back in late September, it only promised that it would launch sometime in “early 2017.” Thanks to an email sent out to Google Play developers today, we now have a better idea of when this will be. The new version of Android Wear is now scheduled to arrive in “early February.”

Unfortunately, no specific date in February was provided. It also remains to be seen if Google will unveil new smartwatches to go with the new version of its wearables operating system. Google confirmed back in December that it would launch two new Android Wear smartwatches in the first quarter but that does not necessarily mean that the launches will happen on the same day.

Once Android Wear 2.0 is out, manufacturers will likely reveal their plans for upgrading existing smartwatch models. Not all models are expected to be upgraded unfortunately. For example,

The email also reconfirmed that Android Wear 2.0 will launch with a new on-watch Play Store “to help users discover apps right on their wrist.” Other expected enhancements include improvements to complications, new UI components and APIs for developers and the new Smart Reply feature offering contextually-aware replies to incoming messages.
