With LTE deployments picking up speed across the world (including here in Canada), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations body, has just approved a new standard for wireless telecommunications. International Mobile Telecommunications-Advanced (IMT-Advanced) promises to deliver significant speed and efficienty improvements over current 3G and 4G ones.
Mr François Rancy, Director of ITU’s Radiocommunication Bureau, said, “IMT-Advanced would be like putting a fibre optic broadband connection on your mobile phone, making your phone at least 100 times faster than today’s 3G smart phones. But it’s not only about speed; it’s about efficiency. IMT-Advanced will use radio-frequency spectrum much more efficiently making higher data transfers possible on lesser bandwidth. This will enable mobile networks to face the dramatic increase in data traffic that is expected in the coming years”
The new standard includes both LTE -Advanced and WirelessMAN-Advanced, the technologies set to succeed LTE and WiMAX respectively. They will offer speeds that could reach peak rates up to 1Gbps for fixed users and 100 Mbps to mobile users moving at fast speeds.
IMT-Advanced is still a few years away from getting into customers’ hands. It will take time for the technology to make its way down to devices such as smartphones and tablets and for carriers to upgrade their networks.

Good review but I think that there will come a time when we look at LTE speeds as fondly as we look back at 2G speeds today.
