Android 4.2.2 the end of the road for HTC One X and HTC One X+

HTC One XThere is disappointing news for HTC One X and HTC One X+ owners today. Despite these devices being less than two years old and 2012 flagship smartphones, HTC today confirmed that neither will be upgraded beyond Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and HTC Sense 5.

An initial statement made by HTC UK via Twitter focused on the HTC One X+:

A further statement by HTC to The Verge also confirmed the news for the HTC One X shortly after:

We can confirm that the HTC One X and One X+ will not receive further Android OS updates beyond Android 4.2.2 with Sense 5. We realize this news will be met with disappointment by some, but our customers should feel confident that we have designed both devices to be optimized with our amazing camera and audio experiences.

No reason was given for the decision. It’s likely that supporting nearly two year old hardware is not high on HTC’s priority list, especially as the company struggles to stem slowing sales and facing an uncertain future.

The news does not bode well for Canadian owners of both the HTC One X and HTC One X+. Neither device has been upgraded past Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to date. Neither carrier currently shows any plans to upgrade these at this point.

If you own either of these devices, have you or will you now root your device to get it past Android 4.2.2? Let us know below!
