Despite a number of rumours pointing to an octa-core Samsung Galaxy S5 variant, yesterday’s announcement was strictly a quad-core affair. The only processor announced is a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 supported by 2GB of RAM. Notably absent yesterday were not only the rumoured octa-core Samsung Exynos processor but any model sporting 3GB of RAM or a WQHD (2560×1440) display.

Following the announcement, Samsung published an infographic that showed how the specifications of the Galaxy S models has changed over the years. It showed that the Galaxy S5 would come with either a 2.5GHz quad-core processor or the 2.1GHz octa-core one. Since then, the infographic has been amended and the octa-core processor reference has been removed. Below is the original version of the infographic:

Why an octa-core version of the Samsung Galaxy S5 was not announced yesterday remains a mystery today. It could be that Samsung pulled the plug on the expected announcement over some last minute technical issues. But that seems unlikely given that the launch is still over a month away. It may have instead decided to hold it back for a later announcement. It could also be that such a variant will see a more limited distribution, perhaps even limited only to Samsung’s home country of Korea.
