MWC 2014: Sony unveils Sony Xperia Z2 and Xperia M2 smartphones

Sony today unveiled two new smartphones at Mobile World Congress. The Sony Xperia Z2 is billed as “Sony’s best ever premium waterproof smartphone” while the Xperia M2 is a new mid-range handset that bills itself as the “slimmest 4G smartphone.”

Compared to its predecessor, the Xperia Z1, the Sony Xperia Z2 is slightly larger with its 5.2-inch display and faster with its new Snapdragon 801 processor (a rebranded version of the Snapdragon 800 MSM8974AC) but is clearly an evolutionary step forward rather than a completely new device.

“With Xperia Z2 we have taken our premium Z series to the next level, delivering unique experiences that only Sony can offer,” said Kunimasa Suzuki, President and CEO, Sony Mobile Communications. “We have redefined the smartphone once again through our camera. Xperia Z2 offers an innovative experience that captures memories in stunning detail through 4K video shooting, or offers new ways to use the camera with our unique Xperia camera apps. Furthermore, the Best of Sony has been delivered in the sound quality and customers are now able to listen to their music even in noisy environments without interruptions thanks to our acclaimed digital noise cancelling technology.”

The Sony Xperia M2 is a new mid-range device. While other manufacturers might have called this one of their mini models, Sony’s mini smartphones (such as the Xperia Z1 Compact) do not compromise on specifications. So rather than calling it a Mini or Compact model and diluting that approach, Sony opted to go with another name.

“Xperia M2 is an ultra fast smartphone that offers brilliant specs and performance, reaching new audiences with a mid-range price. This is a great device for the customer looking for a smartphone that has it all,” says Calum MacDougall, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications. “It combines the best of Sony, bringing you our latest technologies complimented with a one of its kind, unique entertainment offer never before seen on a mid-range smartphone.”
