OnePlus to drop OnePlus One invitation system in favour of pre-orders

OnePlusAs a new player on the smartphone market, OnePlus implemented a system by which those looking to buy a new OnePlus One smartphone had to first get an invitation. The idea behind the system was to control the number of orders as the company ramped up production to meet the expected demand. The system has not been without issues, including a questionable “women of OnePlus” contest.

The invite system was to have made way for open orders earlier this summer but here we are at the end of August with people still chasing invitations in a bid to order a OnePlus One. In a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), OnePlus has confirmed that the system is about to go away. It will be replaced by a pre-orders system:

We are working on a pre-orders system, we were initially aiming for September but it’s been slightly delayed, hopefully we’ll be ready to launch it in October.

OnePlus had originally expected that improved general availability would have allowed it to drop the invitation system in June. The fact that a pre-order system is being rolled out suggests that availability will remain an issue into the fall. At least the pre-order system should make it easier to get your order in.

OnePlus also announced that its new Bamboo StyleSwap Cover has been delayed due to a “minor flaw”. A new launch date has not been set yet. Other case accessories are also still listed simply as “coming soon.”
