OTA update adds portrait orientation mode to Samsung Gear Fit

Samsung Gear Fit

Samsung unveiled the Gear Fit fitness bracelet at Mobile World Congress. It comes with a 1.84-inch Curved Super AMOLED (432×128) display that can display far more information than most other such devices. As promising as it looks, one complaint arose early: It could only display information in landscape mode, making it awkward to read while worn on the wrist. Fortunately, Samsung is pushing out an OTA update that will remedy this situation by adding a portrait mode just as the Gear Fit is set to launch alongside the Galaxy S5 later this week.

Images have already popped up on Samsung’s store blog in Korea, showing both orientations. The new mode certainly makes it easier to read basic information but any notification or message that is a bit longer will still be awkward to read if only because the display is so narrow.

Timing to roll out the Samsung Gear Fit update was not provided. If it’s not available at the same time, we expect that it should follow fairly quickly.

The Samsung Gear Fit is expected to launch later this week alongside the Galaxy S5 and the Gear 2 smarwatches. It will sell for CA$219.99 in Canada, the same price as the Gear 2 Neo which will be a Rogers exclusive.
