Samsung Galaxy S5 GPe surfaces again

Rumoured Samsung Galaxy S5 GPeRumours that Google and Samsung were readying a Google Play edition (GPe) of the Galaxy S5 surfaced in July but little more has been heard about such a device until now. With yesterday’s announcement of the Google Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 along with Android 5.0 Lollipop, Google has updated the Android.com homepage. One particular image, very similar to the one seen this summer, once again features what appears to be a Samsung Galaxy S5 running a stock version of Android except that this time it’s Lollipop.

While this could simply be an error on Google’s part as SamMobile suggests, it appears more likely that the Samsung Galaxy S5 GPe is getting closer to becoming an official product. If anything, the fact that it first surfaced this summer suggests that Google and Samsung have been planning such a device for some time now but eventually decided to wait until Android 5.0 Lollipop was released to make it official.

There is no word on when the Samsung Galaxy S5 GPe could be released but it could do so before the end of the year. It might be a worthy alternative to the too-big or too-expensive Google Nexus 6 for many.
