WIND Mobile coming to Brantford, Ontario in July

WIND Mobile

It has been quite some time since WIND Mobile announced the launch of a new Home Zone. That is about to change according to an update received by MobileSyrup. The carrier is set to expand to cover Brantford, Ontario, in early July. Specific coverage details were not announced but expect it to at least cover the city’s core and its 94,000 inhabitants.

The company also announced that its entire network of 1408 cell sites is now HSPA+ enabled. This gives its customers across Canada download speeds up to 21Mbps, although speeds around 8Mbps are more of the average. Better yet, the carrier has installed HSPA+ Dual Cell technology on some 360 sites already. These will give customers download speeds up to 42Mbps with compatible devices.

WIND Mobile sat out the recent 700MHz spectrum auction. It pulled out at the last moment when expected its parent company VimpelCom decided not to provide the funds necessary for bidding. Upgrading its network to HSPA+DC will help but the lack of LTE still leaves it with a strong competitive disadvantage.

WIND Mobile, which launched in 2009, announced in early April that it now had over 700,000 subscribers.
