Xiaomi to launch CA$95 smartphone in 2015?

XiaomiXiaomi has established itself as a company able to offer similar smartphones to those of competitors at much more affordable prices. This approach has vaulted it into the top five global smartphone manufacturers despite the facts that it only shipped its first smartphone back in 2011 and that its devices are only available in a limited number of markets. The company is now showing no signs of looking to slow down in 2015. A report suggests that it will push the price of smartphones even lower next year.

Taiwan-based supply chain maker sources have told Digitimes that Xiaomi is looking to launch a new line of entry-level smartphones that will sell for under CNY500 (about CA$93 or US$80). While specifications are unlikely to impress anyone, the new devices could help Xiaomi further extend its reach in emerging markets as it gradually expands its global reach.

While details are scarce about this new device, the report indicates that Chinese display maker BOE Technology has been chosen to supply the displays for this new device.

2014 saw entry-level smartphone prices steadily get closer to the US$100 mark. Devices like the Nokia X and Moto E are but two examples of such devices. It may well be that 2015 will see Xiaomi (and likely others) push that price lower.
