CES 2015: Lenovo unveils Lenovo VIBE Band VB10 smartband

Lenovo VIBE Band VB10

Along with new smartphones, tablets and laptops, Lenovo yesterday jumped into the wearables space with the Lenovo VIBE Band VB10. The slim band sports more in common with fitness bands than smartwatches but Lenovo has taken the unusual step of going with an e-ink display.

Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, the Lenovo VIBE Band VB10 promises up to seven days of battery life with the curved 1.43-inch e-ink display (296 by 128 pixels) and Bluetooth always turned on. The display is large enough to show a traditional watch face as well as notifications (calls, SMS, Facebook, Twitter, WeChat and more) up to 150 characters long. It also supports basic fitness functions (including a pedometer and calorie burning tracking). It is also waterproof with an IPX7 rating (up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes).

Despite some conflicting information that suggests it is only available for devices running Android 4.4 KitKat and above, the VIBE Band VB10 works with Android and iOS devices.

The Lenovo VIBE Band VB10 will sell for US$89 (about CA$105) when it launches beginning in April, 2015. It is not expected to launch in the U.S. at that time, suggesting that we may not see it in Canada either.

Compared to much more feature-rich devices from competitors, price and better battery life may well be its key selling points, especially for those wondering if they are ready to get a fitness band.

Update (1/8/2015): We updated the story to correct a statement that the VIBE Band is only compatible with Android devices. Thanks, Mindo!
