Google to announce Android M at Google I/O 2015

Android M at Google I/O 2015?Much as it has done in years past, Google will formally introduce the next major version of Android at its Google I/O 2015 developer conference. And like last year, it will be announced with a single letter designation. Last year, Google gave us Android L and, this year, it will be Android M’s turn. While Google has yet to confirm this news, Android M was specifically albeit only briefly (but long enough for Ars Technica to take a screenshot) mentioned in one Google I/O session’s description.

There are few details about what Android M will include. The session that revealed its existence will focus on bringing “Android to all kinds of workplaces.” Other suggestions include giving users more control over app privacy controls, a revamped notifications system and new voice control features.

It’s not clear at this point what Android M will mean for Android Wear, the wearables extension for devices such as the Moto 360 and LG Watch Urbane which recently went on sale.

The fact that Android 5.x Lollipop has barely made it onto about 10% of Android devices does not appear to have deterred Google from forging ahead with this new version. It will presumably once again launch in the fall with the next generation of Nexus devices before (slowly) making its way onto both existing and new devices.

Google I/O kicks off on May 28th with the keynote by Sundar Pichai at 12:30 ET (9:30 PT)
