Google announces Android 5.1 Lollipop

Google Android 5.0 Lollipop

Google is not ready to let Apple have the spotlight today. Just hours before its competition unveiled new details about the Apple Watch, it unveiled a new Android Wear video. With the Apple announcement now behind us and many now looking through their couches for the money needed to afford a new Apple Watch, Google has announced Android 5.1, an update to Lollipop that “improves stability and performance and offers a few new features.”

Among the new features introduced in Android 5.1 are:

  • Support for more than one SIM card on multi-SIM devices
  • Improved Device Protection where your lost or stolen device will remain locked until you sign in with your Google account even if the device is factory reset.
  • HD voice calling on compatible devices like the Google Nexus 6
  • Quick Settings to join Wi-Fi networks and control Bluetooth pairings

Expect OTA updates to soon be hitting Google’s Nexus devices, including the new Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 and older devices like the Nexus 5.
