Google makes first executive changes under new CEO Pichai

Google logoWhen Google in August announced that it was restructuring and becoming a larger collection of companies known collectively as Alphabet, it announced Sundar Pichai as the new CEO of the company that would continue to carry the name Google. New CEO Pichai this week made his first executive shuffle, promoting three from within the company.

Hiroshi Lockheimer, with Google since 2006 and currently a VP on the Android team, will become an SVP with responsibility for Android, Chrome OS and Chromecast. He will focus on continuing to expand Android’s reach while working with handset partners to reverse the shrinking profits trend of recent times.

In many ways, Lockheimer is following in Pichai’s footsteps. Pichai was formerly the head of the Android and Chrome OS business unit before moving on to first head of all products before assuming the mantle of CEO.

With less time to focus on the engineering side of things, Dave Burke, another Android VP and last seen unveiling the latest Nexus smartphones, will take on a greater role in this area.

Two other key promotions were announced. Neal Mohan has been named SVP for display and video advertising while Phillip Schindler becomes SVP of Global Sales and Operations.

Since this summer’s restructuring, the slimmer Google is focused on Android and Chrome OS, its ad network, search, mapping and YouTube.
