LG G Watch, LG G Watch R and Asus ZenWatch to miss out on new Android Wear Wi-Fi feature

Android Wear watchesGoogle this week announced a major update to Android Wear. Among the new features is one that will allow Android Wear watches to connect to a smartphone via Wi-Fi when the two devices are not within Bluetooth range. Unfortunately, while all watches will get the update, not all will be able to take advantage of this feature.

Motorola and Sony have confirmed that the Moto 360 and Smartwatch 3 will both support the new Wi-Fi feature. Also confirmed is the LG Watch Urbane which got the spotlight in Google’s announcement. Unfortunately, ASUS and LG have confirmed that the ASUS ZenWatch, the LG G Watch and LG G Watch R will all miss out on this feature as they don’t have the necessary hardware to enable Android Wear Wi-Fi connectivity.

The last currently available Android Wear smartwatch is the Samsung Gear Live. Official specifications don’t list Wi-Fi but past iFixit teardowns have confirmed that it has the necessary hardware. At this point, Samsung has yet to issue a formal statement to confirm or deny that the feature will be supported.
