Reminder: Registration for Google I/O 2016 opens today

Google I/O 2016In case you did not put it in your calendar, here is your friendly reminder that Google today opened up registration for Google I/2016. Unlike past years where registration was a mad dash and a quick sellout, Google is once again using a lottery system to ensure that everyone has a chance at attending this year’s installment of its developer conference.

Applications will be accepted starting today to March 10th at 1700 PT (2000 ET). Once the application period closes, Google will randomly select applicants from all qualified applications. Those selected will receive an email confirmation and will then be invited to purchase their tickets.

Anyone not selected or unable to attend for any reason will still get a chance to “be part of the magic” as Google will live stream the keynote and many other sessions.

Google I/O 2016 will take place from May 18th to May 20th at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. This is where the very first Google I/O conference took place back in 2008. A formal schedule has not been published yet but will include not only the keynote session but also opportunities to get hands-on experience and attend code labs.

As for what Google could unveil, there are more than a few possibilities. Google is likely to unveil new version of Android (Android N) and Android Wear. Virtual reality is also expected to grab a bigger share of the spotlight.

Ticket prices remain unchanged from last year. General admission tickets will cost US$900 while academic admission tickets will be available for US$300.
