Fitbit to end Pebble smartwatch support in June 2018

Pebble 2Pebble stopped manufacturing and selling its smartwatches as soon as key personnel and intellectual assets were acquired by Fitbit back in December 2016 for about US$23 million. Support for existing Pebble smartwatch owners continued uninterrupted but the end of the road is now in view. Fitbit has now confirmed that support for Pebble smartwatches will end on June 30, 2018.

Pebble users are passionate about their smartwatches. With that in mind, Fitbit is extending its support of the Pebble smartwatch ecosystem for six more months, to June 30, 2018. During this time, we invite the Pebble community to explore how familiar highlights from the Pebble ecosystem are evolving on the Fitbit platform, from apps and clock faces to features and experiences.

When support ends, the following services will stop working:

  • Pebble appstore
  • Pebble forum
  • Voice recognition features
  • SMS and email replies with iOS (Android will keep working)
  • Timeline pins from third-party apps (Calendar pins will keep working)
  • CloudPebble development tool

Pebble smartwatches and apps will continue to function for now. With no further updates coming, future iOS and Android OS updates could further limit compatibility and features.

Fitbit is inviting Pebble users to pick up a Fitbit Ionic smartwatch and is offering a US$50 discount to make the move more inticing (a valid Pebble serial number is required).

RIP, Pebble!
