Fitbit acquires FitStar personal fitness app

2015 Fitbit lineupFitbit late yesterday announced that it has acquired FitStar, a personal fitness app.

We’re thrilled to announce that Fitbit has acquired FitStar, one of the largest platforms for delivering personalized video-based exercise experiences on mobile devices! You may know of FitStar from their top-rated personal trainer and yoga apps, which offer tailored exercise program designed specifically for you. FitStar has also partnered with some spectacular fitness experts, such as football legend Tony Gonzalez and yoga expert Tara Stiles.

The acquisition will allow Fitbit to offer a more personalized training experience. While FitStar currently  only supports iOS, Fitbit plans to bring the app to other platforms (likely Android and Windows Phone based on Fitbit’s own OS support). Such a move should help expand reach and allow it to grow it from its two-million registered user base.

As for Fitstar, they are promising “new products on new platforms” are coming in the next few months:

By joining forces with Fitbit, we’ll have the resources to accelerate our plans and expand FitStar to millions more people who are looking for new ways to stay healthy. Our biggest request from our FitStar community is availability on alternative platforms so look out for new products on new platforms over the next several months and beyond.

Terms of the acquisition were not revealed. Past rumours had valued the deal at between US$25 and US$40 million.
