100 percent YOY Smartphone growth aim for Microsoft

How does 100 year over year growth sound as a growth target? That’s exactly what Peter Knook, head of Microsoft’s Mobile and Embedded Devices division, is aiming for in the arena of mobile phones running on Windows Mobile. To make Windows Mobile more compelling, Microsoft is looking at connecting Windows Mobile smartphones to its
Xbox Live service. If so, could integration with the Zune service be far behind?

2005 saw the number of devices operating on Windows Mobile double to 6 million. This means that Microsoft expects to finish 2006 with some 12 million Windows Mobile powered phones, 2007 with 24 million and almost 50 million by the end of 2008.

Among Microsoft’s competitors are Symbian which provides its OS to a number of manufacturers, including Nokia, and RIM who also plan to double their user base every year.

Good luck to all!
