Fido goes 3G

Fido

On the heels of Rogers launching its 3G service, Fido has announced its own 3G offering. Considering that Rogers owns Fido, this won’t come as a big shock to anyone.

Fido offers services such as video calling, Internet access, Video on demand which includes hundreds of high-quality video clips of TV shows and more, access to 25 XM Satellite Radio channels, Mobile TV with 25 channels, and the Out & About service for local information on restaurants, bars, concerts and more.

So far, Fido is only offering the LG TU500 clamshell phone with quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and dual-band HSDPA connectivity, dual stereo speakers, a 1.3MP camera and a microSD expansion slot. Prices start at CAD$400 without a service contract and fall to CAD$75 with a three-year service contract that includes data and voice.

The data plans are not for the faint of heart. For example, a CAD$10 per month Surfing data plan gives you 12MB with each additional kilobyte above that costing you a penny.
