Just how big can iTunes collections get?

Will Friedwald claims to have the largest iTunes collection in the world. Named The Matrix, his music collection contains over 170,000 tracks and totals almost 850GB in size. It features almost 3,000 artists and over 11,000 albums. Throw in a couple of “sub-libraries” and it grows to about 1200GB. The iTunes database files themselves reach over 500MB.

Having an iTunes collection of that size does highlight some of the limitations of the software. Basically, it is very difficult to do anything in the library if you’re running a single-processor G5 PowerMac. For example, it can take a few minutes for the track information windows to come up.

Does anyone out there has a bigger iTunes collection?
