Next up for the Zune?

Microsoft Zune

The Zune Microsoft rainbow of colours will be growing. A new light pink colour is on its way to store shelves. Expected in May, it will be available wherever Zunes are sold but it will be limited to a run of 100,000 devices.

Microsoft is also planning a watermelon red version to be available this summer. It’s not clear if this will be another limited edition though.

Meanwhile, rumours earlier swirled that Microsoft was thinking of offering a free Zune to customers signing up to a monthly subscription (like carriers often do with mobile phones). Now Microsoft’s Zune marketing director Jason Reindorp has indicated that this is only one of many options being considered by Microsoft. Even if Microsoft moves ahead with this idea, it is likely not to happen until a flash-based player is released. A cheaper device than the current Zune would make it easier for Microsoft to subsidize such a plan.
