Nintendo Wii outsells Microsoft Xbox 360

Nintendo Wii

The latest numbers from VGchartz.com are in and the Wii has now officially overtaken the Xbox 360 as the best-selling latest generation gaming console. Despite having been released a year after the Xbox 360, Nintendo has now sold 10.57 million Wii consoles, compared to Microsoft’s 10.51 million Xbox 360s. The Sony PlayStation3 is solidly in third place with 4.32 million units sold.

Much of the Wii’s success can be tied to how well it has done in Japan where it has outsold the Xbox 360 3.46 million to a mere 0.43 million units. In America, the Xbox 360 still has bragging rights with 6.75 million units sold compared to 4.24 for the Wii.

VGchartz.com measures sell-through numbers from data obtained from retailers across the world, rather than shipped numbers.
