Two Russian mobile phone companies have announced that they will offer the Apple iPhone later this year. Megafon and Vimpelcom both announced that they had reached agreements with Apple but did not provide any details. For example, the entire Megafon press release read:

MegaFon today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to Russia later this year.

Vimpelcom and Megafon are two of the largest mobile carriers in Russia.

It is estimated that there are some 500,000 unlocked iPhones currently in use in Russia, potentially making it one of the largest markets iPhone markets outside of the United States.
