O2 and Optimus to offer iPhone 3G with pay-as-you-go plans

Apple iPhone 3G

O2 UK has announced that it will offer the iPhone 3G on its Pay & Go plan. Customers will soon be able to enjoy all the great features of iPhone 3G without a monthly contract with the iPhone 3G for Pay & Go.

Details are slim at this time but you can sign up with O2 to receive additional details in early July.

Meanwhile, the same is happening in Portugal, courtesy of Optimus (a subsidiary of Orange). An online iPhone 3G overview on the Optimus site explains that it will be available both on a monthly plan as well as with as a pay-as-you-go option.

Unfortunately, neither company has yet revealed how much the iPhone will cost without a service contract. But if earlier rumours around unsubsidized pricing turn out to be true, prices could run around €499 for the 8GB model and €659 for the 16GB version (about USD$765 and USD$1000 respectively).

I wonder if we will see similar moves in North America (all signs to date point that we won’t though).
