China Mobile to launch Android-based Ophone in May

Google Android continues to gain momentum. According to the Chinese-language Commercial Times, China Mobile is set to launch the iPhone-like Ophone in May. With China Unicom apparently readying the Chinese launch of the Apple iPhone, the Ophone could allow China Mobile to have an alternative to compete with. A May launch would give the carrier a month’s head start over China Unicom.

The Ophone was designed by Lenovo. It will be powered by Open Mobile System (OMS), a China Mobile modification of Google Android with its own applications. It will also come with TD-SCDMA connectivity.
