T-Mobile announces Android 1.5 upgrade to start next week

T-Mobile G1

Google Android 1.5 (also known as Cupcake) is headed to T-Mobile USA G1 users next week.

T-Mobile is delighted to announce the upcoming release of Android 1.5 with “Cupcake” coming soon to the T-Mobile G1! We plan to begin sending out the update starting the end of next week. As with previous software maintenance releases, the update will be randomly sent “over the air” to T-Mobile G1 customers.

The over-the-air update will add new features and updates, including:

  • Soft keyboard support, including both portrait and landscape orientation modes and a dictionary for custom words
  • New home screen widgets, including an analog clock, a calendar, a music player, a picture frame, and search
  • Support for video recording and playback (MPEG-4 & 3GP formats)
  • Stereo Bluetooth support (A2DP and AVCRP profiles)
  • An improved browser with the latest Webkit and Squirrelfish Javascript engines, a unified Go and Search box, and copy-and-paste in the browser
  • And more

Customers will be notified by their G1 when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed.

T-Mobile expects that all G1 users will have received the update by the end of the month.
