More rumours of Google slate device

Back in February, Google teased us with some concepts of a tablet powered by its forthcoming Chrome OS. According to the New York Times, Google CEO Eric Schmidt revealed at a recent party that the company is also working on an Android-powered version.

Few details were revealed but Google appears to be taking Apple’s approach of offering “an e-reader that would function like a computer.” The project is far enough that Google is apparently working with some publishers to explore how content would look and be distributed.

It’s not clear whether Google will adopt the same strategy as it did with the Google Nexus One where it would partner with a device manufacturer to design and build the device.

Google is not alone in looking at slate devices. HP is likely to unveil its own slates later this year and Microsoft (with its Courier prototype) and Nokia among others are also exploring similar options.
