Apple iPhone 5 to come with 8MP Sony camera?

Apple

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer may have inadvertently revealed that the upcoming iPhone 5 will come with an 8MP camera supplied by Sony.

He raised the irony of Sony supplying camera components for Apple devices. It “always puzzles me,” he said. “Why would I make Apple the best camera?”

While Stringer did not mention an 8MP camera or the iPhone 5 specifically, his comments support an earlier report by Electronista.com that Apple would use Sony cameras in its next iPhone after Omnivision, the current supplier of 5MP cameras for the iPhone 4 and 3.2MP ones for the iPhone 3GS, appeared unready to supply an improved camera for the next model. Stringer’s comment appears to have confirmed the rumour.

A separate report also suggests that the seventh generation iPod nano could see the return of a camera while keeping the current form factor.
