Samsung ships over 300 million handsets in 2011

SamsungSamung today announced that its annual mobile handset shipments have now topped 300 million units in 2011. It is the first time that the company has hit this milestone. Last year, sales were in the 280 million unit range. “We look forward to extending this success going into 2012,” said JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business.

The success of Samsung’s Galaxy S and Galaxy S II smartphones was a large contributor. The Galaxy S II set a new sales record for Samsung, topping sales of 10 million units.

Samsung topped first topped shipments of 100 million in 2005. In 2009, it topped the 200 million mark. Its cumulative mobile handset shipments now stands at 1.6 billion.

Nokia is the only other mobile phone manufacturer who can claim to have achieved the same milestone.
