Samsung to stop offering Windows Phone 7 devices by end of 2012?

SamsungSamsung has been the subject of a number of rumours recently about its mobile operating strategy. First, it was looking to buy webOS from HP. It was then supposed to take over MeeGo development from Intel. Now comes another rumour that could see Samsung abandon the Windows Phone platform by the start of 2013. The two tweets (tweet 1, tweet 2) sent by SamFirmware will launch one Windows Phone 7 smartphone in 2012 and bow out after that:

Rumours : Samsung will stop Windows Phone End 2012 so we think 1 new phone and then ……….

Samsung will support Windows phone till end 2012.

It’s not clear why Samsung would make a decision now to drop Windows Phone. While Windows Phone has not set the world on fire so far, this could well change with the Mango release. It’s more likely that Samsung is looking down the road and that it has set goals for itself to continue to offer Windows Phone devices. Should those not be met, it would then pull out as suggested by SamFirmware.

One thing seems clear. All these rumours do indicate that Samsung is giving some hard thoughts on its mobile operating system strategy.
