TELUS tops 7 million wireless subscribers

TELUSTELUS today announced its Q1 2011 financial results. Revenues reached CA$2.5 billion with wireless topping CA1.3 billion. Much as Rogers reported last week, TELUS saw an increased adoption of smartphones with wireless data revenue increasing by 44 percent and data ARPU increasing 35 percent to CA$17.71.

TELUS now has over 7 million subscribers, having added 52,000 new postpaid wireless subscribers (while seeing a decline of 20,000 prepaid customers). TELUS acknowledged the “increased competitive intensity from new entrants and new incumbent brands not in, or fully in, the market one year ago” in attracting new customers.

TELUS also reiterated plans to begin deploying its 4G+ LTE network in the second half of 2011 in major urban markets using spectrum acquired in the 2008 auction. It also indicated that deployment in rural areas will depend on its ability to secure 700MHz spectrum in the next spectrum auction (expected in late 2012).
