TELUS does away with activation and renewal fees

TELUS MobilityAs expected, TELUS today announced it has done away with both the CA$35 activation fee for new customers and its $25 renewal fee for existing customers.

“The wireless industry and competitive landscape have changed over the years and with that, our customers’ needs have evolved,” said Brent Johnston, vice-president, Mobility Solutions, TELUS. “Our customers have told us they feel activation and renewal fees are unfair. We have been listening and that’s why we’re giving them exactly what they’ve asked for.”

At the same time, TELUS announced that it will begin charging CA$10 for SIM cards starting on November 1st. This new charge had originally been included in the activation and renewal fees. A new SIM card will only be required when a customer does not already have one for their device.

TELUS is the first of the Big Three Canadian carriers to phase these fees out. It remains to be seen if Bell and Rogers will follow suit.
