Orascom announced yesterday that it was planning to convert its non-voting stake in WIND Mobile into a voting one thereby taking control of the Canadian carrier and making it Canada’s first foreign-owned carrier. WIND Mobile today issued a press release to reconfirm that the announcement does not affect its current commitments. It also sought to put to rest merger rumours.
“VimpelCom Group and WIND Mobile remain committed to the Canadian marketplace and becoming Canada’s fourth-largest carrier,” said Tony Lacavera, Chairman and CEO of WIND Mobile. “Contrary to certain preliminary stories in the media this morning, while we’re always considering our strategic options, the company is not currently engaged in any active merger discussion. One thing remains unchanged – our commitment to offering Canadians simple, fair and easy-to understand wireless plans at an affordable rate.”
Past rumours have suggested that WIND Mobile could merge with either Mobilicity or Public Mobile and sought partnerships in a bid to expand its network.
